Viola spp. is a beautiful flower that grows well in mild climates. Their planting conditions are as follows:
1. Light
Violets prefer plenty of indirect sunlight, but can also grow in semi-shaded environments. Direct strong light may cause the leaves to burn, so it is best to plant them in a somewhat shaded location, especially in hot climates.
2. Temperature
Violets adapt to mild climates and grow best at 15-20°C. They are not tolerant of high temperatures, and excessively high summer temperatures may cause poor plant growth or reduced flowering. In cold climates, violets can be cultivated as annual plants.
3. Soil
Violets prefer moist soil rich in organic matter and well-drained. The soil pH is best between 6.0-7.0, that is, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Humus, compost or rotted organic matter can be added during planting to improve soil fertility.
4. Water
Violets prefer a humid environment, but cannot tolerate waterlogging. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, especially during the growing season. Overwatering can cause root rot, so make sure the soil drains well.
5. Planting Spacing
Violets are relatively small plants, so usually keep 15-20 cm spacing between each plant. This ensures that the plants have enough space for healthy growth while reducing the spread of pests and diseases.
6. Fertilization
Violets have a moderate fertilizer requirement. You can use a balanced liquid fertilizer (such as 10-10-10 compound fertilizer) once a month, but avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizers to avoid excessive leaf growth and affect flowering.
7. Ventilation
Violets like a good air circulation environment. Avoid overcrowding when planting and ensure air circulation to help prevent fungal diseases.
8. Pruning
Violets are annual or perennial plants. After flowering, you need to prune away the withered flowers and leaves in time to promote new growth and continued flowering.
9. Pests and diseases
Violets may be attacked by some common pests, such as aphids, powdery mildew, etc. Check the health of the plants regularly and take preventive measures to keep the plant's growing environment clean.
